Background

We produce PDT (the Pro~Formance Data Tool).  It's used around the world by people who need to figure out, edit, convert, and manage data files -- sometimes data files created by someone else.  With PDT-Windows you can edit virtually any file on your PC, up to 18 quintillion bytes in size (PDT (DOS) lets you edit files up to 2 gigabytes in size).  And PDT's unique support for fixed-format data files -- including EBCDIC files -- lets you manage and edit files that other programs simply can't deal with.

But sometimes our customers need help in figuring out their data files.  They call us to help them determine what's in their files:  the format, the fields, the field types, etc..  They also ask us to convert data to formats they can more easily understand, edit (often, using PDT), and manage with other software programs.

Data Conversion Software . . .

A Windows data conversion tool is under construction (see below). But, if you need help now converting EBCDIC files to ASCII format, click here:

PDC-E (Pro~Formance Data Convert for EBCDIC files).

Based on our extensive experience helping people edit and manage huge, complex, data files, we're developing a data conversion tool to help you convert data files into formats you can more easily understand and use.

You'll be able to sort most data, select only the records you want included, and convert packed numeric fields into formats you (and the software you use) can more easily deal with.  If you have needs or preferences you would like to see satisfied by this product, e-mail us at:  Support@Pro-Central.Com.

While it's always difficult to forecast software release dates, we're anticipating releasing this product in the Winter/Spring 2001 timeframe.  Pricing has not been determined.

Data Conversion Services  . . .

Our Data Conversion services are available to anyone not just users of PDT.

Our Data Conversion services are thorough, very reasonably priced and f-a-s-t.

Typical types of data conversions include:
Converting EBCDIC files to ASCII, comma-delimited, dBase, etc.
Converting packed numeric fields to decimal text (a format you and I can  easily understand or edit - e.g., converting )B (an integer) to 31,273).
Converting fixed-format files to other formats.

Note:  Virtually every reputable database or spreadsheet program can import dBase, comma-delimited or tab-delimited data files.  So if you can get your data files into one of these formats, almost every other database or spreadsheet program should be able to import them.

We often begin with a phone call to understand your needs and timeframes:   call us at (415) 863 - 0530.  If we both decide to proceed, we normally ask you to e-mail us a ZIP file containing a typical data file, or a portion of one.   (Note:  With PDT you can easily and quickly mark a sample of records and export them to another file.  You can then ZIP up this small file and e-mail that small sample to us.  ZIP files are often 50 - 90% smaller than original data files.)  We'll be glad to examine this file free and get back to you with initial impressions and a firmer estimate of what the conversion would cost.

We can respond to your needs and timeframe in several ways, depending on whether you think your task is a one-time occurrence, or whether it might recur.  For example:

We could convert your data file and send the converted file back to you.  This is the fastest and most cost-effective way to convert a file that you'll probably never encounter again.

Or we could convert your data file, and also send you a compiled program to handle the next same-type data files that you receive.

Or we could send you source code (and a compiled program if you like) so that you could handle future data files yourself.  If incoming data files change, you could edit the source code to handle that change.  Similarly, if you decide to change the format of the output file, you could edit the source code yourself.   Note: We supply source code compatible with Visual Basic (VB) or QuickBasic (QB -- if you're a DOS user).  The reason for this is that VB is very popular and ubiquitous; and scaled-down versions of QB are included in recent versions of DOS and Microsoft Windows (where it's often called Edit.Exe, Edit.Com, or QBasic.Exe).  This often means that you can run the source code we provide without having to purchase a compiler.  Also note that we can offer "runable" source code only if your data conversions do not require proprietary code that we use in our other products (e.g., PDT).

Finally, if your data conversions do require our proprietary code, we'd be glad to discuss licensing our proprietary code to you for use in your programs.
