Overview

With Font Pak DOS and a VGA or EGA monitor, you can:

Replace the normal text-mode font your PC uses to display text in DOS, in almost any DOS program, or in a full-screen Windows DOS box.  We offer DOZENS of unique, dramatic and appealing alternatives!   In fact, Font Pak DOS includes over 100 different fonts!

Display TWO fonts on text-mode screens at the SAME TIME.

Change the shape or style of line-draw characters - those used to draw boxes or lines on your screen.

Create "executable fonts" that load instantly from batch files, from DOS or from programs you "shell" out of.

Create your own fonts, edit the fonts we include, or merge fonts together using the powerful font editor we include.  We even include a utility program to capture fonts on the PCs you use.

Create Big Font! (tm) messages or titles with characters 6 to 16 lines high. These are g-r-e-a-t in batch files!

Here's how Edward Mendelson (a long-time contributing editor for PC Magazine) described Font Pak DOS (www.columbia.edu/~em36/wpdos/textmode.html) :

When you run plain DOS, or full-screen DOS under Windows or any other operating system, the font on your monitor is typically the font built in to your computer's VGA hardware. Many recent manufacturers have replaced IBM's elegant original VGA screen font with unappealing font designs, perhaps because they assume that most Windows users will never see the hardware text font.

Fortunately, you do not have to live with the ugly screen font that came with your hardware. Because the VGA text font is loaded into memory when your computer starts up, it can be changed by software utilities. With most such utilities, the replacement font stays visible until you switch from full-screen text mode into a graphic mode or any other video mode. This means that most screen-font utilities are useless with WordPerfect, because WP often needs to switch into a graphics or print-preview mode.

The only utility I have found that can load a replacement font and make it remain permanently resident until you reboot or unload the font is  Pro~Formance's Font Pak DOS....

Note:  Font Pak's fonts only change the font you'll see on-screen. They do not change the font used by your printer; they won't effect what any program prints.

Also, under Microsoft Windows, Font Pak's fonts only appear in a full-screen DOS box.  If you open a small DOS window, Windows will prevent Font Pak's utilities from doing their stuff.  This is not a limitation of Font Pak. Instead, it reflects differences in how Microsoft Windows manages fonts in either "windows" or full-screen mode.  In short, you'll have more options in full-screen DOS mode, and you should switch to full-screen mode before you load or try out Font Pak's fonts.  Once you successfully load fonts, however, Font Pak's LF-R (load font "resident") program should restore the font you prefer even if you switch from full screen, to a window, then back to full screen.

Description

Font Pak DOS is one of the only ways available to change the default text-mode font in DOS or in a full-screen DOS window under Microsoft Windows.

Font Pak DOS offers over 100 fonts, including many "partial" fonts to change the shape of keyboard characters, foreign language characters, line-draw characters, "control" characters", etc..  You can load 1 or more "partial" fonts to change the shape of only those characters you want to change.   Or, you can use our incredible font editor to create fonts, merge 2 or more "partial" fonts together, edit fonts, etc.

In short, with Font Pak DOS, you can:

Change text-mode fonts.  Display 2 or more fonts at the same time, in text mode!

Replace the text-mode font your PC uses with the font you prefer.

Run LF-R.Exe (load font "resident") and let LF-R maintain your text-mode font even when your software changes screen-modes.  This is unique to Font Pak!  For example, suppose you're working in a word processor and switch to print preview mode.  That change from text-mode to graphics mode usually restores the "default" text-mode font.  But... If you load a font with LF-R, when you switch from text mode to graphics mode, then back to text mode, LF-R will restore the text-mode font you prefer!

Change the shape of LINES and BOXES. You're NO LONGER limited to square-cornered boxes. Choose rounded corners, bold or whimsical boxes, or design your own.

Get up and running quickly.  Registered versions include over 100 fonts you can use as-is, or edit to your liking.  We also include the following programs (along with a text file explaining how to use each):

Try_Font.Exe   Try out (experiment with) Font Pak's many fonts; load fonts; restore the default font.

LF.Exe   Load fonts from DOS, batch files, etc..

LF-R.Exe   Load fonts "resident;" restore the font you prefer when programs change screen modes.

FE.Exe   Font editor - create, edit, merge fonts, etc..

MakeCom.Exe   Create "executable" fonts you can load from batch files, from DOS, etc..

FontCap.Exe   Capture text-mode fonts you see on the screen.

BigFont.Exe   Use Font Pak's fonts to display LARGE, BOLD messages from DOS, batch files, etc..
