Introduction

With PDT-Windows ™, our 18-quintillion byte file editor, you can view, edit, figure out, repair or salvage virtually any file on your PC.  PDT-Windows is especially useful to edit the millions of fixed-format data files or EBCDIC files in use around the world.

Be sure to read the Review of PDT by the author of a competing product!

If you're thinking about upgrading from PDT (DOS) to PDT-Windows, be sure to click here:  A Comparison of Windows and DOS versions of PDT.

(Note:  PDT-Windows runs in Windows 95, 98, NT 4+ and Windows 2000.  It will not run in Windows 3.x -- PDT-Windows is a 32-bit product.)

Overview

With PDT you can edit, figure out, repair and manage any type of file, of virtually any size:  over 18 quintillion bytes in the PDT-Windows, up to 2 gigabytes in PDT (DOS)!

PDT is especially handy when you need to edit almost any-size file or need to edit any character in files, figure out file structures, read or verify the values of numeric fields (even fields stored in packed form), repair damaged files, and view and edit EBCDIC files (like those downloaded from IBM mainframe computers).

Are you working on data conversion issues?  PDT is used in many shops to create, edit and examine files as staff struggle to accurately convert data from one format to another.   Examine your own work (or that of others); compare "original" and "converted" files to ensure the reliability of your efforts; etc..

PDT offers many, handy options to help you manage data files:  block and column options, expand or shrink field widths, add sequence numbers to fields, or add up fields, define file structures, determine field types, and much more.

Description

Very simply, PDT is the most unique, powerful file editor available!  If you need to edit database files, binary files, EBCDIC files, executable files, font files – any file – you'll find that PDT is an indispensable tool.  And PDT is especially useful in helping you figure out files, determine field types, read values of packed numeric fields, repair damaged files, merge files, export sections of files – and much more.

PDT can save you hours or days of time!   You can do things with PDT that you'd normally have to hire gaggles of programmers to do for you.  For example:  /p>

You can view and edit any type of file:  data files, executable files (.Exe or .Com files), EBCDIC files, ASCII files, font files – any type of file.  PDT displays, and lets you edit, any ASCII character in files – all 256 of them, with no limitations!  And you can view and edit files in either normal or Hexadecimal modes -- both modes at the same time if you like.

You can edit huge files – files with over 18 quintillion bytes in PDT-Windows, and up to 2 gigabytes in PDT (DOS)!  And you can open up to 10 files at once in PDT-Windows (1 - 4 files in PDT (DOS)).   View and compare different files.  Or work in different areas of the same file.  Since each file can be huge, you can work with massive amounts of data at the same time!

You can manage data files like you've never been able to before.  PDT offers unique, very powerful features to help you manage any fixed-format data files.
PDT automatically detects dBase ".DBF" files, formatting your "view" of them in logical rows and columns.

With other fixed-format data files (like those created by programs written in C, Pascal, BASIC, Visual Basic, Delphi, C++, Java, COBOL, etc.), PDT lets you easily and quickly figure out file structures, and determine field types.

And if you're given files with structures you don't understand, PDT has many options to help you figure out what you're looking at, and how to manage it.

Once you define a file's structure, which is easy to do, PDT formats your "view" of the file in logical rows and columns, and offers many other features as well.  For example, once PDT knows a file's structure, you can:
Easily view and edit the file, moving quickly from field to field.  You can even view the values of packed numeric fields (integer, floating point, BCD, Comp-3, binary, etc.), and press a key to edit these packed fields in easy-to-understand decimal form (the Review of PDT has examples).
Mark blocks (either columns or records) and then:   Export them, Copy them, Erase or Fill them, Add them up, add Sequence Numbers to them, etc.
Expand or Shrink the width of fields!  This feature is amazing to watch.

PDT even manages EBCDIC files – like those found on, or downloaded from, large IBM computers.  PDT's dynamic EBCDIC-to-ASCII translation lets you view and edit EBCDIC files in easy-to-understand ASCII mode.   Changes you make to the file are saved to disk in EBCDIC.  PDT (DOS) can even translate EBCDIC files to ASCII, or vice versa (read about our Data Conversion tool for even more options).

PDT is especially handy to:
Edit files especially huge files which other programs simply can't handle.
Determine file structures: record or field lengths, field types or values, etc.
Repair files, regardless of their type or size.
Read and edit values of numeric fields, even those stored in packed formats.
Edit executable files to customize messages or options.
Edit any ASCII character in files all 256 of them.

Finally, PDT is very logical, easy-to-understand and easy-to-use.
